The US approach to safety management at nuclear facilities consists of an integrated system whereby worker, environmental, and public safety is inherent to the work being performed. This approach is being applied to all Department of Energy (DOE) facilities and programs. A defense-in-depth philosophy identifies hazards and controls them at the level of the source material itself, the primary containment of the material, and, finally, the facility holding the material. Although hazards control has always been a part of the operations around nuclear materials and facilities, recent steps towards integration have improved overall safety as well as efficiency and security.
