A development account is presented for a microwave chaotic communications system proposed for commercial or military applications. The effort involves three implementation phases: (I) chaotic carrier generation, (II) chaotic synchronization, and (III) chaotic modulation; with Phase I being the subject of this narrative. High-frequency and broadband system requirements prompted a chaotic oscillator implementation strategy using frequency up-scaling of classical baseband circuits. Project highlights and lessons learned-involving unforced (autonomous), and then forced (nonautonomous) oscillators-will be described, marked by the invention of a novel wideband high-frequency realization method that is promising for real-world applications.
