We suggest bit-interleaved coded moduation with iterative decoding for bandwidth-efficient transmission over Gaussian channels. unlike ocnventional trellis-coded modulation, BICM-ID does not proivde a large free Euclidean distance. Therefore, its performance after initial decoding is not good. However, iterative decoding brings a dramatical gain and delivers a final result remarkable better than TCM. We explain the key to this improvement and address critical design issues. Also, we show that the performace of BICM-ID converges to the bound assuming error-free feedback and is only about 0.5 dB away from the perfomance of turbo-TCM.
