In this paper, a new multiple squeeze films ER damper is designed first and the Reynolds equation is established. Then the behavior of the rotor system is analyzed, an on/off control method is proposed to control the vibration around the first critical speed and a control method is used to suppress the sudden unbalance response. Finally, experiments are carried out to investigate the behavior of the rotor system to prove the effectiveness of the on/off control method to suppress the vibration around the critical speed and to prove the effectiveness of the ER damper to suppress the sudden unbalance response. Very good results were obtained through theoretical and experimental studies.
