Abstract: A model using energy balance is proposed to describe the volume fraction of martensitic transformations. It is found that in the absence of external stress, the volume fraction of martensite $xi in the forward austenite-to-martensite transformation is proportional to the undercooling and inversely proportional to a linear function of the instantaneous temperature T. Similarly, for the reverse transformation from martensite to austenite, $xi is proportional to and inversely proportional to a linear function of T. The results obtained from this model are in good agreement with experimental results. !35
