PHOBOS~(1),(2),(3),(4),(5),(6) IS the name of one of currently four experiments (PHOBOS, PHENIX, STAB, BRAHMS) being developed to explore the new regime of heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. At the RHIC faciliyt, which will become operational in 1999, it will be possible to study hadronic matter at energy densities which are an order to magnitude higher than what has been produced in the laboratory before. Au+Au collisions at 200 AGeV center on mass energy may-on a small scale-reveal conditions similar to those which occured in the first few micro-seconds of the creation of the universe. In this regime of extremely high energy densities new phenomena such as the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) are expected to manifest themselves.
