The most efficient form of sediment control is "source protection." However, with urbanization and increased human activity on developed sites, erosion is almost inevitable, and "source protection" may not be completely achieved. Several forms of structural practices, such as detention basins, silt traps, check dams, etc., have been used for prevention of eroded sediment from entering into waterbodies. In recent years, stringent regulatory standards have promoted the use of sediment retention structures, in the United States, in developed as well as in construction sites.
