Gas and particle samples were collected using several types of instruments and analyzed for mass and chemical composition in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park during the Southeastern Aerosol and Visibility Study (SEAVS). In this paper, we compare and synthesize observations made at a single location using multiple samplers to characterize chemical climatology; reliability of observations; plausible explanations for inter-sampler differences; and the magnitude of fine particle fraction whose composition remains unknown. In addition, we use the a knowledge of aggregate particle properties to formulate hypoteses (to be tested with ongoing experimental work) concerning the composition of the organic fraction.
