The future of coal mining in valea jiului coal basin - an environmental approach

The 13 collieries from Valea Jiului coal basin are having a significant on the environmental conditions in the region. Affecting the landscape by the prospection and exploitation workings, the atmosphere by the methane and other gaseous pollutants, and the Jiu river by the waste waters resulted from technological processes. In the first main section of the paper the actual environmental state in the basin is presented based on a comprehesnive database regarding the magnitude of each major pllution factor. The second main section is focused on the short, medium and long-term strategies wich must by put in practice in order to diminish the pollution degree induced by mining operations. The proposed solutions are correlated with restructuring policy of mining industry in Romaina and the national environmental legislation.
