In recent years, ATM technology has evolved dramatically, and it will become even more important as bandwidth requirements increase. Today's legacy communication networks will co-exist with the evolving broadband technology for a long time. Therefore, consolidation of telephony and narrowband services into ATM networks is seen as a major step of convergence towards a universal broadband network delivering all types of services. Initially, these services will mainly be transported transparently wihin the ATM network. In the future, the switching function for the most-common services will also migrate into the ATM network.
