Flyash Utilization in Stabilizing Expansive Alluvial Soils of India

摘要

Flyash is well known waste product generated at avrious thermal power plants. In India, the generation of flyash is expected to cross 100 million tonnes by the year 2000. Utilization of flyash in bulk quantities is possible in geotechnical engineering works. This would reduce the disposal problem to some extent. In the present study, flyash has been mixed with typical alluvial and expansive soil in varying proportions to assess the stabilizing effecf of flyash. The experimental programme included, chemical and geotechnical characterization and evaluation of flyash and alluvial and expansive soils. SEM anlysis has also been carried out to observe the effect of flyash on soil fabric and microsturcture. From the study carried out, it is has been concluded that to stabilize and not cause any detrimental effect to the soil, 8percent to 12percent flyash can be mixed with alluvial soil and 16percent to 20percent with expansive soil and be utilized in geotechnical engineering works.
