A programmable speech processor to be used along with a cochlear implant has been designed Based on a TMS320C50 DSP and a large amount of flash memory, the system is fully programmable, which confers it all the flexibility needed to implement and test new stimulation or speech analysis algorithms. The system can be used as either a stand alone unit to be worn by the patient, or as a remote system to perform tests when connected to a PC. When used as a stand alone unit, the patient has the freedom to choose among four different modes of operation. The main system fits in a 90 ?60 ?25 mm package and consumes less than 127 ma; a lower power consumption version is expected to be completed soon.
