New High-Speed atm backbone for academic science information network in Japan

The number of users using state of the art multimedia applications and campus area networks that are introducing high speed ATM LAN technology is steadily increasing. The academic science information network in Japan needs to evolve from a legacy IP backbone to an ATM-based high-speed multimedia backbone. To achieve a high-speed multimedia wide-area netowrk, the National Center for Science Information Systems has upgraded its network by incorporating ATM technology and an ATM switching system. Deployment of this network has been started in 1996; it now links 29 ATM backbone nodes throughout Japan. About 500 universities and research organizations use the network. This paper reports the objectives and requirements for introducing ATM technology and the network architecture issues, including the configuration, topology, routing strategy, and traffic engineering for both the ATM and IP layers. The new integrated network opeartion system architecture is also described.
