The role of new technologies in wireless access network evolution

The market for wireless telecommunications infrastructure equipment is expected to continue to grow at an astonishing pace. This growth is fueled by a corresponding increase in demand for network services supporting voice, data, and multimedia services in cellular, PCS, and wireless local loop (WLL) applications. A the same time, technology--particularly i nthe commercial hardware and software industries--is advancing at an unprecedented rate. Within tele-communications networks, the introduction of ATM transport technology and the application of this technology to standard (TIA IS634) base station to switch connections, offer new opportunities for more efficient, more cost effective networks. This paper discusses architectures for use in the next generation of wireless access network infrastructure that wil leverage these new technologies and provide end users with a wide range of wireless access and advanced services. We also provide a brief overview of the broader telecommunications network context within which that evolution must take place.
