The mission of a pharmaceutical R&D organization is to discover novel entities that are safe and effective in treating disease, and to bring those entities through the regulatory review process to market. The effectiveness and efficiency at which an organization performs those functions depends, to a large extent, on the information tools that the organization has available and how well these tools are used. This paper discusses an approach based on experience at a large company that utilizes information technology in ways that efficiently accomplish the business goals of a pharmaceutical R&D organization.
