Abstract: Two approaches have been explored for the retrieval ofatmospheric constituent and aerosol extinction profilesfrom radiance measurements made by a limb soundingsatellite radiometer. One of the retrieval schemes canbe used with different signal to noise ratios and withmeasurements from different spectral regions. Multipleconstituents can be retrieved simultaneously.Characterization and error analysis of the retrievedproducts arise naturally from theoreticalconsiderations. The algorithms have been implemented onCLAES, an infrared limb sounder on the upperatmospheric research satellite. The CLAES measurementtechnique requires the level 1 extracted radiance datafrom CLAES to be processed before they are input to theNCAR research retrieval algorithm. The algorithms areapplied to blocker 3 radiance measurements and someinitial results are presented. !4
