Abstract: In the industrial application of high power lasers, the knowledge of the properties of the laser beam is of great importance. The definitions given in ISO 11145 and ISO 11146 are rather sensible and efficient from a mathematical point of view and as long as more or less perfect beams are considered. In real life, however, there are some problems. The major problems with beam characterization according to ISO 11145 and ISO 11146 are discussed on a basis of examples taken from measurements of high power carbon-dioxide lasers in industrial applications and environments. !1
