Abstract: In this paper a dual ring metropolitan area network(MAN) employing spatial reuse is proposed for theinterconnection of base stations in distributed controlwireless personal communication networks (PCNs). Apreemptive priority mechanism is introduced that cansupport effectively voice/data personal communicationservices. The operation of the proposed mechanism doesnot require the wastage of channel bandwidth and canpreempt the transmission of low priority packets (suchas data packets) for as long as there are active highpriority classes (such as voice traffic) in the system.In this way, the effect of low priority traffic on highpriority traffic can be minimized and the effect ofstation location on performance can be significantlyreduced. Furthermore, a fair share of the transmissionbandwidth among similar priority traffic sources can beachieved. Simulation results are used to investigatethe effectiveness of the proposed mechanism in thepresence of two priority classes and the systemperformance under voice/data transmissions isdiscussed. !13
