A planar diversity antenna for hand-held PCS devices

The performance of a diversity antenna and a monopole antenna on a hand-held PCS device are compared, and the presence of the body (head and hand) is considered. Two versions of the diversity antenna result in less power absorbed in the head than when the monopole is used, but the power absorbed in the hand is higher. For all three antennas, the hand does not significantly alter the shape of the radiation pattern of the dominant polarization, but it absorbs a substantial amount of power, causing the total polarization angle to deviate from the ideal. The head distorts the shape of the radiation pattern.
