An analytic method is developed to calculate the reflection and transmission of electromagnetic waves as they propagate through the ionosphere region. The model chosen for this study is a magnetized, steady-state, two-dimensional, nonuniform plasma region, which is presented by a number of parallel flat layers. The fields in each layer are written in the form of summation of the appropriate eigen functions weighted by unknown scattering coefficients. These coefficients are determined via the application of the boundary conditions at each interface. Successive application of the boundary conditions results in obtaining a matrix of scattering coefficients. This method hereafter is referred to as the Scattering Matrix Model (SMM). Presentative numerical results for reflected and transmitted powers of the electromagnetic waves through the ionosphere are presented.
