Cavity-backed antennas have been used extensively in various applications in the past. The light weight, low loss and relative ease of fabrication process make them attractive candidates for high frequency applications. On the other hands, when integrated with active components their metallic walls serve as a heat sink to dissipate the heat generated by the active elements. Modification of the resonance frequency, admittance and radiation characteristics of these antennas has been achieved by the employment of unconventional cavity-backed slot antennas and adjustment of the structural features of cavity or the aperture [1].
