The development of a very wideband balanced stripline printed dipole array placed above a conducting ground plane, as shown in Fig. 1, is discussed in this paper. A balanced printed dipole has its arms printed on the top and bottom conducting plane of a thin substrate mounted normal to the array ground plane. An integrated matching network forms the centre conductor of the stripline feed. The arms of the dipole are bifurcated with one branch parallel to ground and the other branch tilted at an angle. For the dipole considered here, the arms are at 45°. The dipole is top loaded by a parasitic element as shown in Fig. 2. This form of the dipole is found, both theoretically and experimentally, to possess broadband pattern and input impedance properties even under wide scan conditions.
