Virginia Power's use of polymer housed surge arresters to protect 138 kV transmission lines

The purpose of this paper is to detail the factors contributing to Virginia Power's decision to use polymer housed metal-oxide surge arresters to improve the lightning performance of their 138 kV system. This paper reviews traditional and modern lightning protection methods and the various parameters that influence their effectiveness.
