Multilevel signaling for extending the dispersion-limited transmission distance in high-speed, fiber optic communication systems

Simulation results are presented for intensity-modulated, direct-detection fiber optic communication systems using multilevel signaling. Specifically, we investigate the potential of 4-ary amplitude shift keying and compare the performance to simulated results for both binary and duobinary signaling schemes.
