An object-oriented database is described that can be used to create multimedia compound documents. Each document represents a news story and consists of objects of text, sound, audio, and video that can be added and modified by multiple authors. Each object has revision control information that allows editors to assemble multimedia news as it arrives. World Wide Web users can access the multimedia news repository, and the system can create personalized views of the information based on each user's previous browsing behaviour. Issues of privacy and security are also discussed.
