Continuous operation of space radio systems is usually achieved nowadays by using geostationary satellites and in the near future by low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. However another solution is possible for operating distances up to 1000 km, by using a stratospheric quasi-stationary platform (SQ-SP) at a median altitude of 21 km above ground. The feasibility and main characteristics of SQ-SP systems are described, followed by aeronautical and control techniques considerations. Wireless power transmission concepts and rectifier antenna (rectenna) operation are explained as well as the main payloads and applications. The SQ-SP future systems can become complementary to geostationary and LEO satellite systems.
