Abstract: The investigations described in this paper highlight some important aspects of diamond turning `hybrid' type IR optics. Three commonly used IR substrate materials are assessed for their machinability into diffractive `hybrid' type elements. The influence of various machining and tooling parameters on surface quality are discussed. Achievable lens precision, surface quality and machining rates are provided.!6
