Abstract: A simple spatial-domain multiresolution scheme ispresented for preserving multiple regions of interest(ROIs) in images. User-selected ROIs are maintained athigh (original) resolution while peripheral areas aredegraded. The presented method is based on thewell-known MIP texture mapping algorithm usedextensively in computer graphics. Most ROI schemesconcentrate on preserving a single foveal region,usually attempting to match the visual acuity of thehuman visual system (HVS). The multiple ROI schemepresented here offers three variants of peripheraldegradation, including linear and nonlinear resolutionmapping, as well as a mapping matching HVS acuity.Degradation of image pixels is carried out relative toeach ROI. A simple criterion is used to determinescreen pixel membership in given image ROIs. Resultssuggest that the proposed multiple ROI representationscheme may be suitable for gaze-contingent displays aswell as for encoding sparse images while optimizingcompression and visual fidelity.!11
