Abstract: In this investigation, motion analysis is carried out on image sequence using region-based feature matching. A Two-Pass search algorithm is devised for motion estimation. Each image is partitioned into a number of blocks. The movement of each block is determined by looking for the corresponding block in the previous frame of the image sequence. In the first pass, fractal dimension is estimated in the neighborhoods of each block. The coarse position of the corresponding block in the previous frame is identified based on the similarity of that parameter. This position is then regarded as the center of the search space in the second pass, which employs grey level Exhaustive search to determine the fine position of the block. The algorithm has been tested on a sequence of 16 images. The performance of the Two-Pass search is found to be much better than the grey level Three-Step search and comparable to the grey level Exhaustive search.!6
