Abstract: This paper presents an investigation of the monitoring of cracks at the edge of fastener holes on plates using an ultrasonic pulse-echo technique. Our studies show that, if the surface of the plate surrounding the hold is free, an acoustic wave on the surface of the plate is able to detect the cracks located in an arc of 60$DGR@. When the inner surface of the hole is free, surface acoustic waves on the inner surface are alternate choices. For the case when all these surfaces are in tight contact with other parts, hence unavailable for mounting transducers, a particular type of Lamb wave mode is presented.!8
