Abstract: Stochastic properties of backscattered light are used for tissue discrimination. Tissue penetrated red light provided by a low power semiconductor laser is picked up by glass fibers and converted to electrical signals. The time varying signal parts are analyzed by power spectra and coherency. Both signal curves and results of analysis demonstrate the validity of the method for discrimination between physiological and malignant tissue. !9
