Abstract: The illumination of a mixture of the photosensitizer methylene blue and the reagent tetraphenylcyclopentadienone by 630 nm light results in a change in the absorption spectrum of the mixture dependent on the light energy absorbed. The absorption peak of the reagent at 500 nm is used to quantify the photodynamic response by placement of small capillary tubes containing the mixture within an optical phantom. The light distribution within the phantom was measured simultaneously. The fluence rate predicted by diffusion theory is correlated to that of the photodynamic response. Methylene blue is commonly used as a standard photosensitizer and this study also allows comparison of the relative photodynamic effects of different photosensitizers. !8
