Airbag restraints in automobiles, properly used with the lap and shoulder belts, are credited with saving hundred of lives a year, and soon thousands as airbag protective systems are mandated for the front seat positions of all passenger cars by the 1998 model year and for all light trucks, vans, and sport/utility vehicles by the 1999 model year. In 1994, some 12 million passenger cars and light trucks and vans were sold in the United States with airbag restraints (over 80 percent of the sales), and airbag use world-wide is growing rapidly.
