Reliability is a primary concern for designer sand operators of advanced life support systems. System reliability is determined from the individual components and how those components are combined. The reliability of most physical components is either determined by the manufacturer of the component, or is known through experience. Therefore, the reliability of a physico-chemical life support system can be predicted based on the components used and their configuration. The information required to predict the reliability of the biological components in a bioregenerative life support system is not as well defined.
