Experiences on the integrated control and avionics for airsuperiority (ICAAS) program are used to discuss various methods forvalidating avionics system performance in the air-to-air mission.Digital air battle simulation proved to be an effective screening toolfor identifying first-order mission effectiveness trends. Part tasksimulations added the human element to the evaluation. Full-missionmanned simulations provide the most comprehensive and accurateassessment of the performance of the integrated avionics system in theair-to-air mission. The flight test program is described and justifiedas a limited but necessary real world validation and demonstration ofsystem performance benefits
