The FEST (fuzzy logic expert system) shell allowed us to create the knowledge bases and membership functions with minimal effort, providing us this a level of abstraction from the details of implementation and allowing us to concentrate on the system and knowledge design. We were able to prove our goal of modeling a helicopter flight system and although we had the assistance of a naval pilot with experience in this domain, the system we developed does not include all the parameters required for proper flight control and the control outputs used were, for this project, all linear functions. This proof-of-concept project provides the basis for a complete flight control system using this development tool and its inferencing functions in the target platform.
