The authors are engaged in a study to identify those factors that predict patients at increased risk of cerebral dysfunction following cardiac surgery. In order to evaluate predictors of potential cerebral injury, the physiological data from different monitors must first be collected and integrated into a format suitable for formal analysis. The authors' approach is to combine data from standard patient monitors with data from special monitors into a single record and display it using a personal computer running a data acquisition program written in a graphical development system; LabVIEW for Windows. The authors show both their data acquisition system and its application during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery.
