A trellis coded, type-I hybrid-ARQ protocol using CRC codes as the error detecting mechanism is described and analyzed. Bounds on both the reliability and throughput performance are derived for AWGN channels and slowly fading Rician channels. Examples are included to illustrate the substantial gain achievable with the proposed system relative to ordinary FEC trellis coded systems. The performance of the proposed protocol is compared to a similar trellis coded hybrid-ARQ scheme based on side information within the decoding process. All analytical results are supported by data from a series of simulations.
