A prototype thermal scene simulator is being developed to convert a visual scene to thermal image. A single visual-to-thermal converter cell combines a photodetector and a thermal pixel along with a local A/D operating in the current domain and control circuitry. Because thousands of these cells are required to convert an image with proper resolution, this application requires a small, low-powered custom A/D converter design, able to work within a very broad range of visual scene light intensity. Two designs of signal converters operating in the current domain are described and compared for the final application.
