The author describes some of the work in the area of slot discharges undertaken at the CERL-CEGB Research Laboratories (now National Grid R&D Centre) since 1980. Slot discharge mechanisms are considered, and results of laboratory studies using bar and sheet samples are examined. Slot discharge damage is a problem encountered with epoxy micapaper systems used in large machine windings. The main insulation system has been developed to be resistant to partial discharge attack. However, research has shown that slot discharge can include other types of gas discharge such as surface discharge and a sustained discharge which is probably a glow-to-arc transition.
