Vacuum switchgear meets the needs of power refurbishment

Older power stations are now double shifting and life is being extended. It is now necessary as part of the refurbishment programme to replace the switchgear. The author discusses the design of new vacuum switchgear to meet the needs of refurbishment. Various aspects of the design are discussed including the thermal rating, busbars, construction, earthing switch, materials, and testing. The Aberthaw power station refurbishment project is described as an example.
