With the advent of expensive fossil fuel, industrial consumers reviewed their usage to see if alternative fuel sources would be more economic. However, oil companies had little alternative but to continue using oil and gas. Escalating costs did cause them to review losses (gas being flared) and efficiency. The author illustrates the approach that BP oil successfully implemented.
