Software considerations in the design of a 16 kbps speech coder for a TDMA portable phone

The authors address the software design considerations of a 16-kb/s subband speech coder for application to portable communications. The various interface requirements to a time-division multiple-access (TDMA) radio link are explained. The tradeoffs in accuracy, speed, and memory requirements are carefully analyzed. It is shown that a single DSP (digital signal processor) realization results in a real-time prototype speech coder for portable communications, yielding good speech quality.
