The author reviews the characteristics of the existing undersea optical fiber systems and describes those systems which are in the advanced planning stage. He focuses on the key technological developments which are expected to significantly influence the capability of optical systems to meet evolving international services and markets needs. The technology developments considered are coherent detection techniques and wavelength division multiplexing, heavy-metal-halide glasses, passive and active branching, and optical amplifiers.
