A number of performance and condition parameters influence pavement rehabilitation treatment selection.One of the key parameters in assessing various rehabilitation treatment options is the pavement ride beforerehabilitation and the target smoothness after rehabilitation. Some practitioners have used a broadspectrum of profile simulation tools to determine the effect of various rehabilitation strategies on theresulting post-construction smoothness. Lacking such tools, others simply rely on anecdotal improvementsbased on past agency or published experiences.This research study is focused on quantifying actual ride improvements realized following therehabilitation of British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and AlbertaTransportation provincial highway projects. The study was designed to address two questions:1.How is roadway profile affected by rehabilitation treatment type?2.How is the International Roughness Index affected by rehabilitation treatment type?Over 150 projects totalling over 1,200 two-lane km of roadways rehabilitated over a three-year periodwere included in the study. Rehabilitation treatments included Hot In-Place Recycling, Mill & Inlay, andOne, Two, and Three lift Overlays.
