摘要

The advent of satellite-based augmentation systems has made it possible tonavigate aircraft safely using radio signals emitted by global navigation satellitesystems (GNSS) such as the Global Positioning System. As a signal propagatesthrough the earth's ionosphere, it suffers delay that is proportional to thetotal electron content encountered along the raypath. Since the magnitude ofthis total electron content is strongly influenced by space weather, the safetyand reliability of GNSS for airline navigation requires continual monitoring ofthe state of the ionosphere and calibration of ionospheric delay. This paper examinesthe impact of space weather on GNSS-based navigation and providesan overview of how the Wide Area Augmentation System protects its usersfrom positioning error due to ionospheric disturbances.
