Nonlinear absorptivity of Foturan glass to ultrashortlaser pulses is evaluated by experimental measurementand thermal conduction model at different parametersincluding energy and repetition rate of the laser pulse,translation speed and thermal properties of the sample.The mechanical strength of an embedded laser-meltedsample and an overlapped weld sample is determinedby a three-point-bending test and a shear test,respectively. The results are related to the averageabsorbed laser power W_(ab). We found the mechanicalstrength of an overlapped weld joint to be as high asthat of the base material for low W_(ab), if the sample pairis pre-bonded to provide optical contact.
