Many businesses are intrinsically tied to the reliability of their energy provider. Even momentary interruption of power or variations in voltage and frequency can have sever implications on processing equipment, operations or information technology systems. These disturbance or interruption of the normal power source can be life-threatening or have huge financial impact on operations and take hours or days to restart. In some cases, losses cannot be recovered. This paper centers on ways to maintain satisfactory power to critical loads and to auxiliary loads necessary for facility operation - without interruption - and offers ways to ensure continuous power during a disturbance lasting fractions of a second to interruptions that last for many days. This paper centers on the ability of hybrid-microgrids to provide a reliable power source and presents a case study of a microgrid without interconnection to an outside source or utility.Finally, the paper considers the critical factors of maintenance, operations, safety, and economics.
