Given the crucial modernization of the power systems and the evolution of protective relaying developments, it is imperative to merge from traditional protection systems to novel approaches which allow flexibility and possible time-domain protection. This time-domain approaches for power system protection must be tested in realistic and flexible platforms before its actual implementation. Cheap and flexible testing platform are needed to fill this gap. For this purpose, a hardware-in-the-loop virtual distance relay for feeder protection is presented in this paper. The relay is tested in a hardware-in-the-loop simulation of a single-machine infinite-bus system simulated in the PSCAD software, and the virtual relay was implemented in a LAUNCHXL-F28379D commercially applicable micro-controller. All fault types will be tested, shown its feasibility for commercial protection system setting testing.
