Regulating Transformer Rectifier Units (R-TRU) are increasingly being utilized in more electric aircraft architectures to increase power system efficiency, reduce system weight, improve power quality and reduce electrical stresses on aircraft electronics. This paper describes an R-TRU electrical architecture which consists of a three-phase Power Factor Corrected (PFC) power converter followed by a resonant mode DC/DC converter with a continuous power capability of 7kW, or 250A at 28VDC. With the selected electrical architecture, efficiency is maximized, weight is minimized, and inherent control redundancy reduces the probability of a fault that can damage load electronics.
